Fuels
Fuels and Services
Once waste has been collected, it is processed to create suitable fuel sources for the technology at the Power Plant. Below are three types of waste generated fuels defined:
Refuse derived fuel (RDF) is produced from domestic and business waste, which includes biodegradable material as well as plastics.
Non-combustible materials such as glass and metals are removed, and the residual material is then shredded.
To site an example, RDF is used to generate energy at recovery facilities, many of them in Europe where they produce electricity and hot water for communal heating systems.
Solid recovered fuel (SRF) is a high-quality alternative to fossil fuel produced from mainly commercial waste including paper, card, wood, textiles and plastic. Solid recovered fuel (SRF) has gone through additional processing to improve the quality and value. It has a higher calorific value than RDF.
Process engineered fuel (PEF) can be defined as a processed solid fuel, made from segregated plastic and paper, derived from industrial, commercial, and residential sources, for use by utilities and industry.
Biomass is fuel that is developed from organic materials, a renewable and sustainable source of energy used to create electricity or other forms of power. Another definition of biomass is a renewable energy source from living or recently living plant and animal materials which can be used as fuel. Examples of biomass is plant material that produces electricity with steam.

Transforming Waste to Fuel – An Overview
CSS Energy Solutions offers the following options for Waste to Energy/Energy from Waste & Biomass:
Pre-Processing Lines for SRF/RDF/PEF or Biomass Fuels, to feed Power Plants
EPC (Engineer, Procurement & Commissioning of Power Plant Project
JV Partnership in local Power Plant Project (includes EPC & Funding of Complete Project)
With these options available, we are interested to talk to medium to large scale waste generators, landfill owners, government departments and private operators. We can offer first stage processing, right through to turn-key fuel preparation lines or power plants to the right partners.
